The Acai Berry and Health Benefits

The Acai berry grows deep in the Amazon Forests of South America. The natives to the area have for a long time used this purple/reddish fruit as healing tonics. Once it was introduced to the United States the acai berry became very popular as a great superfood. It’s popularity has spread in the use of the acai for weight loss supplements, health drinks, and energy enhancers.

Nicholas Perricone came on the Oprah show discussing the benefits of acai berry. He talked about the fruit as an antioxidant. It contains one of the highest antioxidants of all the fruits you can ingest. It has double the amount of antioxidants in blueberries and contains as much as ten times the count as grapes contain.

While still being studied, the acai berry is believed to increase energy, improve stamina, and improve mental focus. It also helps improve sleep, which will in turn contribute to increased energy.

Antioxidants are a leading factor to a better healthy heart. Antioxidants have shown to improve cholesterol by researchers. One of the leading contributers to heart disease is high cholesterol. That means acai berries can help prevent heart disease.

Another important role antioxidants play is in the maintenance of blood circulation. It also affects heart health, since the heart works to pump the blood. Heart health and blood circulation aren’t the only things that the acai berry aids. People suffering with digestive complaints have also found relief with the acai berry. This is believed to be due to the high fiber content.

One important study of acai berry is that it may have the ability to fight cancer. Studies have shown that the antioxidants in the berry destroy cancer cells.

Whatever it is you have ailing you, the side benefits of taking something with such a high antioxidant content will only give you improved health. This secret that has been known by the natives may be available for all of us, and something we should have known all along – nature genuinely is the best healer.

    Okay … my mom and I are not so happy with our weight … we have tried a lot of diet drinks and excersises, but they all seem to be temporary, and we are wondering if there are any places where we can buy Acai berries in Edmonton, Alberta … ?

    Sorry for not getting back to you earlier as I’ve been on holidays. You mentioned you drink diet drinks. That’s a mistake. Even diet drinks contain too much sugar and other chemicals not good for you. Try sipping on cold water throughout the day instead. Cold water increases your metabolism to maintain proper body temperature. As for exercises, try doing them as soon as you wake up (before eating). By doing some weight training first thing in the morning you will lose more body fat and lose it faster. As for Acai berries in Edmonton, I can’t help you. However, being from Edmonton’s sister city – Winnipeg -, I found that major grocery outlets such as Safeway are beginning to carry juices made with the Acai berry. Hope this helps.
