Prolapsed hemorrhoids occur when the internal hemorrhoid extends beyond the anus. This type of hemorrhoid is actually very severe and involved in three out of the four hemorrhoid stages. Prolapsed hemorrhoid occurs in stage two to four. In stage two the hemorrhoid naturally goes back into position, in stage three the hemorrhoid must be manually returned into the anal canal and in stage four the hemorrhoid cannot be manually put back into place.
Prolapsed hemorrhoids are internal hemorrhoids that hand outside of the anus. It is not understood what causes these types of hemorrhoids but it is as though an individual’s lifestyle and stress play an important role. You can make lifestyle changes that can decrease your chance of acquiring hemorrhoids. This is a great preventative measure even if you have suffered from hemorrhoids in the past.
Many times a prolapsed hemorrhoid will need to be treated, generally prolapsed hemorrhoids that are in stage three or four. There are several surgical procedures that can be used. It is best to treat your hemorrhoids as soon as possible as you can avoid surgery. There are many non-operative procedures to deal with stage one and stage two hemorrhoids. Many times hemorrhoids will go away naturally but if your hemorrhoids are prolapsed then you will need treatment.
Dilation and sphinctectomy were once used to treat prolapsed hemorrhoids. These two procedures are no longer used as the nature of hemorrhoids is clearer and in many cases the patients lost their sphincter function and could not control their bowel movements. Dilation works by stretching the sphincter and anal canal to relieve the pressure associated with hemorrhoids. A sphinctectomy involves cutting the sphincter to relieve the pressure. It should be noted that neither of these two methods actually treats the hemorrhoids.
Rubber band ligation and Doppler Ligation are two popular forms of treatment. Rubber band ligation works by using a rubber band to cut of the circulation to the hemorrhoid. This in turn causes the hemorrhoids to shrink and return to normal. Doppler ligation works under the same principal except that the blood vessel that is inflamed is tied off causing the hemorrhoid to shrink back to normal. Rubber band ligation is much less expensive then Doppler ligation and just as effective.
It is possible to have the hemorrhoid completely removed by having a hemorrhoidectomy. This can provide immediate relief and also reduce the chance of having the hemorrhoid come back though it can take a while to heal. You will need to be on pain and antibiotics to stave off infections and reduce pain.
One of the newest methods and quickly becoming very popular is the stapled hemorrhoidectomy. A hemorrhoid moves because it is enlarged and the connective tissue becomes stretched. Basically the hemorrhoid is stapled back into place. This procedure is actually quie easy and recovery time is fairly short.
Possible the best way to treat hemorrhoids is to prevent them from occurring. You can achieve this by drinking plenty of water, easting high fiber foods, avoiding stress, exercising regularly and having good personal hygiene.
