Medicine for Gout

Gout is a kind of arthritis which causes acute pain and tenderness in joints. The joint that is most commonly affected is the one at the base of the big toe. Gout is thought to be the most painful form of arthritis because it tends to happen with no warning and can cause intense pain. The big toe is the most common area to be affected but it can also be found in the knees, fingers, hips, ankles or other joints as well.

A major change in diet is an important, if not primary, natural medicine for gout. Gout is seriously aggravated by purine foods, and may even be the sole reason for gout.

Some purine foods include:

  • organ meat
  • meat gravy
  • stock
  • mussels
  • herring
  • anchovies
  • shellfish
  • sardines
  • asparagus
  • mushrooms
  • white flour
  • spinach
  • cauliflower
  • dried beans
  • poultry
  • and sugar

Alcohol, especially beer, is very high in purines and must also be avoided, unless you can compensate with drinking a lot of water along with the beverages to keep acid from building up in your system.

Replace these foods with

  • fruits
  • other berries
  • vegetables
  • whole grains
  • and especially wheat grass

Beef, iron, and pork are also purine rich foods, but these meats do not usually cause gout if they are consumed in moderation. Game meat may also contain high amounts of purine, although most people do not consume a large amount of game meat as part of a modern diet.

The use of cherries in alleviating gout can be traced back to a 1950 study conducted in Texas. 12 patients were observed after they were made to consume about a pound of cherries daily. It was discovered that the level of uric acid in their blood dropped to normal, they became less prone to gout and movement became less painful to them.

Symptoms of a gout toe include:

  • intense pain
  • redness of the infected toe
  • and swelling of the infected area

A patient may think that he or she has broken his toe. The suspicion of a broken toe leads to him making a doctor’s appointment. The doctor will quickly determine the real cause of the pain. Gout treatments include avoiding purine rich foods. The doctor will most likely give a gout patient prescription painkillers.
