David Norman Gout is a type of arthritis that occurs when uric acid crystals accumulate in the joints. Gout usually affects the large joint of the big toe but can also affect other joints, including the knee, ankle, foot, hand, wrist and elbow. The shoulders, hips or spine can also be affected during the later stages of gout. The symptoms of gout usually appear suddenly, and can last anywhere from a few hours to several days.
